Volunteers are crucial to the success and future of any museum or heritage site and the West Midlands Volunteer Awards were set up to recognise that fact – and to celebrate the work volunteers do and what they can achieve.

Tim Rose and Janet Clough are Forest School volunteers at Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park in Warwickshire.

They were part of a team that won the Museum Champions category and the overall Judges Award in 2018.

Tim said: “Being nominated for the Volunteer Awards was an honour in itself but actually winning was a very pleasant surprise, especially as all of the other volunteer groups were equally deserving for what they do.

“However, once again it is worth mentioning that delivering such a proactive and rewarding Forest School is a team effort and credit should also go to Compton Verney and all the staff working hard to support their volunteers.”

Janet adds: “The award gave us all at Compton Verney the recognition that our work is worthwhile and added to the pleasure we gain from something that is such an enjoyable part of our lives.”

Emily Medcraft, the Visitor Experience Manager at Compton Verney said the Awards cemented the value that they put on the team efforts to make learning, and the gallery and park, accessible to all.

She said: “We use the Awards as a way of recognising the work and commitment of our volunteering team publicly. What’s the point of having a supportive team of skilled volunteers if you don’t shout about and celebrate their achievements?

“I love working with people and I have the best team in the world who are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our visitors leave with a smile on their face.

“We care for the building, our park and collection equally and our volunteering team provide the whole of the organisation with the support that enables us to do just that.”
