Carbon Literacy Training
634 museum staff, volunteers and trustees have become Carbon Literate through Museum Development England since November 2021.
Reducing your energy usage means reducing your energy bills, benefitting both your budget and the planet.
West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) and Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM) are partnering to deliver several rounds of training, using the Carbon Literacy for Museums Toolkit developed by Museum Development and the Carbon Literacy Trust as part of the national Roots and Branches project.
What is a Carbon Literacy course? Becoming Carbon Literate will give you an understanding of what climate change is, the scale of its effects, and how museums fit into the global, national and local picture to address climate change. You become Carbon Literate by making an individual pledge, and an organisational pledge to take back to your museum, of what you can do, and is in your power to achieve, to make a significant difference to your carbon impact.
Who can attend? Anyone – we welcome all trustees, managers, volunteers and paid staff from museums across England who want to understand the part they can play in tackling the climate emergency.
What’s involved? The course is made up of four modules – the first module is pre-recorded and there are three Zoom sessions:
- Tuesday 27 February – the pre-recorded module will be sent to you. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
- Tuesday 5 March, 10am-12.30pm – Zoom session 1
- Thursday 7 March, 10am-12noon – Zoom session 2
- Thursday 7 March, 1pm-3pm – Zoom session 3
You only need to book once for the whole course.
Attendees will be certified as Carbon Literate once they’ve successfully completed the course. Therefore, it is essential you are able to attend all three Zoom sessions and undertake all course activities in full.

Getting Your House in Order – Loans In and Loans Out
Good collections documentation enables use of your collections and ensures that your museum is properly accountable for the collections it holds.
West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) is partnering with Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM) and Collections Trust to deliver Getting Your House In Order, a programme of seven workshops across 23/24 to support you in ensuring that your collections documentation is well managed.
This is the fifth workshops in the series and will explore the Spectrum 5.1 procedures for borrowing and lending objects:
- Loans In – managing objects you borrow for a fixed period of time and for a specific purpose
- Loans Out – assessing requests for you to lend your objects and managing the lending process until loans are returned to you
We will review the policy considerations, requirements, and guidance for both procedures, discussing how this is approached by attendees.
There will opportunities to discuss with colleagues, ask questions throughout and submit questions in advance.
By the end of the session, delegates will:
- Understand the role of the Spectrum standard, and its supporting guidance, in relation to museum Accreditation
- Understand policy considerations for borrowing and lending
- Understand the Spectrum requirements for Loans In and Loans Out
- Know where to find more information and guidance
Before the session:
- Think about how you do things in your museum, referring to your museum’s policy and procedures related to borrowing and lending collections. You might also find it useful to have these with you to refer to during the session

Working with Young Volunteers
Would you like to work with young volunteers in your organisation?
During this training session, we will be exploring all aspects of how to work with young volunteers, from recruitment and logistics to safeguarding.
We will hear case studies from museums in the West Midlands about their work with young volunteers.
The session will help delegates to:
- understand the importance of this work
- think about how to develop young volunteer roles
- gain inspiration from case studies to take your own work forward
- understand good practice around safeguarding and young volunteers
This training is aimed at staff who work in museums, art galleries and heritage sites who are interested in developing or improving their provision for young volunteers. Voluntary volunteer co-ordinators, whose main role is to lead day to day on the involvement of volunteers and/ or young people, would also benefit from this session.
About the trainers
Eleanor Moore is the Sustainable Volunteering Officer with the South West Museum Development Programme. Her background is in social and community history curatorship and advisory work within the museums sector, with experience of managing volunteer teams.
Laura Bedford is the Head of Programmes at Kids in Museums. She has worked in or with museums for over 20 years, with previous learning-based roles at the National Maritime Museum, Geffrye Museum (now the Museum of the Home), and Te Papa. Laura previously managed the National Alliance for Museums, Health and Wellbeing and was the director for GEM’s health and wellbeing intermediate course.

Becoming an Equitable and Inclusive Organisation
What does being an equitable and inclusive museum mean for organisations?
This short introductory session discusses the approaches and mindset that can help museums on their Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) journey.
Session aims:
- Increase understanding of what Equity, Diversity and Inclusion means for museum practice
- Raise awareness of the impact of racist and exclusionary practices
- Explore and reflect on the skills and competencies that support an organisation to continue to develop and embed EDI practices into its operations
This event is aimed at museum Trustees, managers and staff who wish to better understanding what is needed to develop an equitable and inclusive organisation.
About the trainer
NoBarriers deliver tailored approaches to increasing inclusive and equitable practice in the cultural sector, including training, advice, strategic planning, service review and community engagement. Isilda Almeida, founder of NoBarriers, works as an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant in the culture sector and brings with her over 20 years’ experience of the UK heritage sector.

How to Influence
Do you struggle to make yourself and your ideas heard?
Do you get frustrated by people often telling you no?
Or you would simply like to be more influential in different contexts?
This course is for colleagues of all levels who want to improve their influencing skills to achieve better results.
At the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- identify situations both internally and externally that are dependent on your influencing skills
- recognise key models and how to utilise them to develop your influencing approach
- explain how to use both non-verbal and verbal communication skills effectively when influencing
- identify how to improve your own personal effectiveness when in influential situations
About the day
This is practical, interactive course delivered in partnership between West Midlands Museum Development and ted Learning. The day will be facilitated by Paul Hargreaves, an expert communication skills trainer, and two professional actors. We’ll explore some theory of communication and influencing and focus on how to have maximum impact by ensuring your body language and voice are congruent with the message you’re trying to deliver.
Through lots of practical and interactive activities, you’ll explore which approaches are effective in different situations and what works best for you, your influencing style and the factors that motivate others, supporting you to develop a flexible approach and become a successful influencer.

This event is an introduction to volunteer recruitment and management, aimed at developing participant’s confidence and knowledge.
By the end of the training, participants will:
- Understand what makes a meaningful volunteer experience and have reflected on key trends and research into volunteer engagement
- Understand the importance of the volunteer journey and have reflected on the strengths and weaknesses of the current volunteer journey within their museum
- Understand how to plan for volunteer recruitment including considering the needs and aspirations of potential new volunteers and the importance of getting the current team on board
- Be able to design attractive and diverse volunteer roles, which offer flexible and rewarding options for engagement
- Have considered a range of approaches to volunteer recruitment, including those that can increase diversity and inclusion
- Understand how to identify key communities that they want to engage with and a variety of approaches to reach them – for example, through effective partnership working, targeted recruitment and marketing

Carol is a specialist in volunteer management, mentoring and conflict resolution with over 25 years’ experience in the field. During that time, she has worked for local, regional and national charities across a variety of sectors including heritage, disability, animal welfare and international aid. She has led and managed volunteers across a number of disciplines including fundraising, service delivery, advice and support, research, visitor experience.
Laura is a specialist in volunteer engagement and volunteer management, with over 20 years’ experience working in this field. Her background includes working for both volunteer involving and volunteer infrastructure organisations. Since 2017 she has worked as a freelance consultant; supporting organisations to establish, grow and develop volunteering and delivering training, learning and mentoring for volunteer managers.

Managing Museum and Archive Collections Together
Join West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD), Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM) and The National Archives (TNA) for a workshop exploring how to manage both museum and archive collections.
The course will:
- help museum and archive managers to understand more about effective management of mixed (museum and archive) collections
- demonstrate where managing archives and museums are similar and where there are differences
- highlight how both Accreditation schemes run alongside each other and can dovetail
- demonstrate how a complete mixed collection can be managed using the best of each sector
- highlight the TNA ‘Managing Mixed Collections’ guidance and AIM ‘Successfully Managing Archives in Museums’ guidance
This workshop is aimed at museum professionals managing services with mixed collections, and museum staff and volunteers with collections management responsibilities.
The course will be a mix of presentation, case studies, discussion and breakout rooms including the use of Mentimeter. Please ensure that you can access Mentimeter alongside Zoom on your device, or bring along a second device, so that you can join the discussions on the day. You will also be asked to bring an object or document along with you to help form the basis of discussions in the break-out sessions.
About the trainer
Janice Tullock is an Archives and Heritage consultant, working with archive services, museums and organisations outside the cultural sector, to manage collections and develop audiences for services. In 2021 she was lead consultant on the development of The National Archives guidance, Managing Mixed Collections. Janice is a member of the Archives Accreditation Committee and an expert mentor on behalf of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
