Introduction to the National Curriculum

Are you new to Heritage Learning or trying to develop a relevant learning offer that schools will want to book?

Without a background in education or teaching it is sometimes difficult to understand how the National Curriculum works and how you can build a learning offer that is relevant to it. This session will offer a whistle stop tour of the National Curriculum and the opportunities and challenges it presents for museums/ historical sites.

It will also give you time to consider ways in which your museums/ historical sites can deliver learning outcomes across different areas of the curriculum.

By the end of the session, delegates will:

Have an understanding of the National Curriculum
Be able to link this to a museum setting
Have an understanding of learning outcomes
Have met other members of the network at a similar position

Brave Conversations: For Museum Managers

Do you find that what you say is sometimes misinterpreted by others, or people don’t do what you’ve asked them to?
Maybe you shy away from giving difficult feedback or having conversations that might provoke a negative response?
Perhaps you sometimes wonder why you bothered having the conversation in the first place?

This full day, in person interactive workshop is designed to help managers to develop their communication skills to feel more confident at handling difficult conversations effectively to achieve positive outcomes.

Rethinking Cataloguing

In this bitesize session Collections Trust will introduce the latest version of the Spectrum Cataloguing procedure. This procedure has been updated following extensive consultation during spring/summer 2022, alongside Use of collections, to encourage a more inclusive approach.

Using the new procedure as the framework for the session we will discuss; ethical principles for cataloguing, accountability, access and users, the importance of transparency and recording past practice.

From Couch to Accreditation: get ready for your museum’s return

This practical workshop will provide an overview of the 2018 Museum Accreditation Standard and is ideal to help you get ready for your Accreditation application, whether you’re preparing your return, your first application or seeking to refresh your knowledge of the Scheme.

You’ll gain an overview of the 2018 standard, the online application system and accompanying guidance documents. The workshop is also peppered with practical exercises that will help you plan.

The workshop will be delivered in two parts (morning and afternoon session) with sufficient breaks to allow you to step away from your computer screens.

Jennie is the Midlands Accreditation Advisor for 23/24. She has extensive knowledge of the museum Accreditation standard having worked as an Accreditation Adviser with ACE (2011-15) and MDNW (2018-22).
