This practical workshop will provide an overview of the 2018 Museum Accreditation Standard. You’ll gain an overview of the 2018 standard, the online application system, and accompanying guidance documents. The workshop is also peppered with practical exercises that will help you plan your return.
The workshop will be delivered in two parts (morning and afternoon session) with sufficient breaks to allow you to step away from your computer screens.
About Jennie
This workshop is delivered on behalf of WMMD by Jennie Pitceathly. Jennie is a freelance consultant in the museum and heritage sector. She has extensive knowledge of the museum Accreditation standard having worked as an Accreditation Adviser with ACE (2011-15) and MDNW (2018-22).

Applying for ACE Project Grants
Due to popular demand we’re repeating this workshop.

Join West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) and Sarah Waldron for this workshop on writing convincing funding applications, with a focus on National Lottery Project Grants.
Sarah will show how to present yourself and your organisation as a viable investment and how to clearly present your project. You will learn what the funder wants from your application, look at the confident writing style required and understand how to put together the supporting documentation to make your application succeed.
What are National Lottery Project Grants?
National Lottery Project Grants (Project Grants) are Arts Council England’s (ACE’s) open access programme for arts, libraries and museums project funding. Grants range from £1,000 to £100,000+; they are divided into applications for under £30,000 and applications for over £30,000.
Accredited and non-Accredited museums can apply for a Project Grant at any time, however ACE have recently introduced ‘Unlocking Collections’ as a Time Limited Priority. This means that until November 2022, ACE is prioritising and encouraging museums to apply for activity to develop their collections-based work and increase public engagement with, and use of, their collections.
Please note: the workshop will focus on writing Project Grant applications, not the Project Grant guidance or eligibility.

Sarah is a freelance consultant and bid writer, specialising in arts, heritage and community projects. She has helped many clients gain funding for the first time. Having previously worked for ACE and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), Sarah has extensive experience of working with a variety of organisations, giving advice and guidance on funded projects, grant management and strategic objectives.

Introduction to Grant-making Trusts and Foundations
Join West Midlands Museum Development and Adam Siviter, Fundraising Manager for Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, for this introductory workshop on fundraising from grant-making Trusts and Foundations.
The workshop is primarily aimed at smaller museums who might not have a Trust fundraising strategy.
Trust fundraising refers to applying for grants/ donations from grant-making Trusts and Foundations whose main remit is to make grants to registered charities/ other charitable organisations or community projects to support their work. In the UK alone, there are over 8,000 grant-making Trusts and Foundations who give in excess of £3billion annually to charities.
Adam will give an overview on defining the charitable need of your museum and the developing a ‘case for support’, as well as good working practices on research and making the ask through a robust Trust fundraising strategy.

Adam Siviter has worked in the charity sector for over 12 years as a fundraiser working for health and disability charities before joining the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust as Fundraising Manager in 2019. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising.

Introduction to Spectrum 5.0
Due to popular demand we’re repeating this workshop in partnership with the Collections Trust.
“Very interesting workshop with detailed and informative presentation slides.”
Suitable for those new to the Spectrum collections management standard or in need of a refresher, this online session will offer an introduction to Spectrum 5.0.
We will discuss how a Spectrum 5.0 procedure works, how Spectrum might be applied within your own organisation and briefly introduce the primary procedures for Accreditation. We will also look at the difference and relationship between plans, policies and procedures.
There will be opportunities to ask questions throughout. You will also be invited to submit questions in advance.
By the end of the session, delegates will:
- Understand what the Spectrum standard is, and how it might be applied within their museum
- Understand the role of the Spectrum standard in relation to museum Accreditation
- Understand the difference and relationship between plans, policies and procedures
- Know where to find more information and guidance
Before the session:

- Think about how you do things in your museum, referring to your in-house procedural manual if you have access to it, although we appreciate you might not right now. You might also find it useful to have it with you to refer to during the session.
Priority will be given to delegates to delegates participating in WMMD’s Banish the Backlog cohorts, but it is also open to museums in the West Midlands which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation. Maximum two delegates per organisation.
