Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM) and West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) are delighted to be working with Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy to offer a suite of fundraising workshops for 2023/24.
The programme consists of eight, two-hour online workshops which will explore income generation from digital fundraising to developing on-site retail. Each workshop will present key theories and case studies, allowing for discussion on practical application. There is no requirement to attend every session, although they complement each other, they also work as stand-alone workshops. Read about the full programme of events.
Income from Hires
Friday 1 December, 10am-12noon
This workshop will support participants to think about how to best use their space to generate income. This might be through regular meeting room hire, through events, or longer-term leasing. The session will include examples of museums who have generated significant income through utilising their buildings, and give top tips for those wishing to start, or grow a room hire business.
Places are very limited, maximum one delegate per organisation. Priority will be given to delegates from non-NPO and non-National museums in the West Midlands which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation.

This session will support participants to consider ticketing events, one-off activity or on an ongoing basis for their museums Attendees will gain an understanding into online ticketing; consider how to integrate ticketing into day to day activities; and cover key things to consider when choosing a system to use.

Winter is Coming: Maintaining collections care standards during an energy crisis
As winter approaches, and the pressure of high energy bills continues to have impact, how can museums ensure that they safely maintain their collections?
Join Jane Thompson-Webb, Conservation Team Leader at Birmingham Museum Trust for this two hour online session. Jane will look at some of the steps we can take in our collection stores, display areas and exhibition spaces to reduce our energy consumption whilst continuing to protect collections and to take forward learning experiences from last winter.
This is an updated version of last year’s ‘Winter is Coming’ workshop. You are welcome to attend again if you came along last year but this is aimed at those who are looking anew at energy bills and the impact on collection care this winter.

This workshop will introduce staff, Trustees and volunteers to the basics of fundraising, including key income streams and top tips for maximising success. It will support participants to review different income streams, set realistic targets and consider what is the best return on investment.

Museum Energy Management: Preparing for the winter
As we head towards an unpredictable winter, now is the best time to find ways to reduce your energy bills and save money.
This two hour workshop with energy management specialists Pilio will explore low and no cost interventions to help save energy in preparation for winter. We’ll cover energy management; energy monitoring; boiler settings; internal temperatures; fabric and draughts; lighting; night use minimisation and the use of environmental sensors.

Recruiting Young Trustees
Our colleagues at Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM) are offering places to trustees of museums in the West Midlands for this upcoming seminar.
In this bitesize session MDEM will be focussing on how to recruit younger trustees to your museum. The workshop will be led by Heather Lomas, Organisational Health Consultant for MDEM who will share learnings from MDEM’s Succession Planning programme. It will also feature insights from Alison Bowyer, Executive Director of Kids in Museum on their board’s approach to recruiting younger trustees.
There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion throughout.

- Are there any barriers to attracting younger people as trustees and how can these be removed?
