‘Open to All 2021’ Accessibility Audit programme

Would you like bespoke, professional training and recommendations to support you to make your venue more accessible?

West Midlands Museum Development (WMMD) is providing four museums in 2021 with the opportunity to receive professional advice to improve access for visitors at their venue. WMMD have appointed Direct Access to deliver this programme.

Each venue will receive an accessibility audit and report identifying a comprehensive list of tailored, prioritised recommendations based on current standards and legislation, an Easy Read Welcome Guide providing essential pre-visit information for their venue, expert training and advice.

The 2021 ‘Open to All’ programme has been developed in response to recommendations identified by an independent evaluation of the WMMD ‘Open to All’ programme 2015-2020,and wider sector research, including Museum and Heritage Access Survey 2020 – VocalEyes.

Since 2004 Direct Access and its team of NRAC certified Access Consultants has provided access consultancy for thousands of buildings and services across multiple sectors. Millions of people daily use a service or premises audited by Direct Access. Direct Access’ clients range from small community museums such as Nantwich Museum to large sites including Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Scotland, Bodelwyddan Castle in Wales or UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the City of Bath and its Roman Baths.

Participation in the Accessibility Audit programme directly supports Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard 2018, Users and their experiences, 7. Be accessible to the public.

More information and to apply

Priority will be given to non-NPO and non-National museums that are Accredited or Working Towards Accreditation based in the West Midlands. Places are limited and as such this is a competitive application process. Museums that have previously received an accessibility audit through WMMD will be considered.

Closing date for applications: 5pm, Monday 14 June.

Audience Champions – Open for applications

Audience Champions will equip museums to develop a data-driven approach to audience development by gaining in-house skills in data collection and data analysis using Audience Finder. Working in partnership with The Audience Agency this programme aims to support museums recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic focusing on short and medium term planning in rebuilding, increasing, or diversifying audiences.

This is a two year programme commencing in June 2021.

Year one will be split into four phases and delivered through a series of eight short, online workshop sessions (90-120 minutes) where you will:

There will be structured tasks in between these sessions followed by ongoing West Midlands Museum Development and Audience Agency support.

*A sample size of 380 visitor surveys ensures you achieve robust data. The programme will support museums of all sizes in collecting visitor surveys that is appropriate to your capacity.

All workshop sessions will be delivered via Zoom and will require participants to have access to the internet and a laptop or tablet to take part.

Year two will be about embedding your research and an audience focus within the organisation and will require museums to participate fully in Audience Finder and to share your learning.

This programme aims to support Requirement 8: Understand and develop your audiences, of the Accreditation Standard, November 2018.

Priority will be given to non NPO museums who are Accredited or Working Towards Accreditation in the West Midlands region.

Museums must commit to attending all training sessions and collecting audience data over a two year period when enrolling on the programme.
